Forward #1

Forward #1

We were born
sound and sightless
fumbling for care
in the place They
called Home.

We were fed by
withholding hands
just enough to crawl
not too fast
not too far.

We learned of play
and sunlight secondhand
listening close
to the stories
and songs

that echoed
down tunnels
They told us
led nowhere
but black.

We made whispered plans
slow to trust
quick to move
yearning towards some bright
Somewhere, some luminous future
too hot to touch.

They learned of our dreams,
passed sentence on the
treason in our hearts.
They opened the gates.
Told us we were free.
They posted guards at our heels
calling us back to their waiting guns.

Some of us were promised safe return
others condemned to exile
but all of us knew that
staying
meant
dying
so when They said “go”
We ran.
